A trip with the gang is a different animal to a family holiday or a couple's getaway. You want to actually do things — get in the water, ride around on scooters, find the good cafés, end the night somewhere with cold beer and a view. Nobody wants to spend forty minutes arguing about which beach to drive to next. So we've built two ready-made plans that keep a group moving: a packed single day that hits the surf belt and the brewery scene, and a two-day version that adds a backwater boat trip to a hidden beach.
We host groups near JIPMER all the time, and the same advice comes up every visit, so a few ground rules first. Pondicherry is best covered on two wheels — rent scooters the moment you arrive (most rental shops want a licence and a small deposit, and a group of four is two scooters). White Town, the French Quarter with the pastel houses, is compact and walkable, so park up and explore on foot there. The surf beaches and Auroville are 8–12 km north of town, an easy 20–30 minute ride. And the cool morning is precious — get the surf or the beach done early, because the midday sun on the east coast is no joke.
Both plans below are interactive. Each one opens in our free Pondicherry itinerary planner, which sequences the stops by driving time and shows the whole route on a live map — so you can shift the start time, drop a stop, or add your own and it re-routes instantly. 1-Day Pondicherry Itinerary for Friends
This is the high-energy single day — surf in the morning while you're fresh, beach-hop through the afternoon, shop and watch the sunset, then close out with craft beer. Open this plan in the planner to route it from wherever you're staying.
Morning: coffee, then a surf lesson
Fuel up first at Baker Street, the French-style bakery-café that's a Pondicherry institution — strong coffee, croissants and quiches, the kind of breakfast that sets a group up for a physical morning. Don't linger too long; you want to be on the water before the heat builds.
From town it's a short ride north to Kallialay Surf School on Serenity Beach. This is the spot for first-timers and improvers alike — friendly instructors, boards and rash vests provided, and a beginner-friendly beach break. Even if half your group has never stood on a board, a morning lesson here is the single best memory most groups take home. Book ahead if you can, especially on a weekend.
Right there is Serenity Beach itself — the laid-back, fishing-village-meets-surf-town stretch where you'll cool off between waves. Catch your breath on the sand, watch the fishing boats come in, and let the group regroup after the lesson.
Afternoon: a long lunch and a second beach
You'll have earned lunch. Terrassen Cafe is the natural stop — a relaxed garden café in the Auroville direction with a wide menu, good for a group that can't agree on cuisine. Take your time; the post-surf appetite is real and the afternoon is for slowing down.
Then roll a little further to Auroville Beach (Repos), a broad, popular stretch that's great for a second dip and some lazy time on the sand. It's busier and more open than Serenity — good for a group that wants space to throw a frisbee, swim and dry off in the sun.
Evening: shopping, sunset and craft beer
Ride back into town and head for Casablanca on Mission Street — Pondicherry's well-known lifestyle and souvenir store, handy for picking up gifts, beachwear or that one thing someone forgot to pack. It's an easy, air-conditioned browse before the evening kicks off.
As the light softens, walk down to Promenade Beach for sunset. The 1.5-km seafront boulevard is closed to traffic in the evenings and the whole town comes out to stroll — it's the social heart of Pondicherry and a perfect place to watch the day end with the group.
Then close the night the right way at Catamaran Brewing Company, a craft microbrewery pouring its own beers — the ideal place to toast a day well spent. Lively, sociable and very much aimed at exactly this kind of trip, it's the natural full stop on a group's perfect Pondicherry day.
2-Day Pondicherry Itinerary for Friends
Got a long weekend? The two-day version keeps the surf day intact and adds a proper boat-and-beach day, so you're never repeating yourself. Day one is the north surf belt; day two heads south to the backwaters. Open the 2-day plan in the planner to route both days end to end.
Day 1 — surf, beaches and a brewery sunset
Day one follows the same energetic arc as the single-day plan, with room to breathe. Start with coffee at Baker Street, then take your Kallialay Surf School lesson on Serenity Beach while the morning's cool and the waves are clean. Hang around on the same sand afterwards to dry off and swap stories.
Head up the coast for an Auroville-side lunch at Terrassen Cafe, then beach time at Auroville Beach. Before you turn back, swing by Boutique d'Auroville — the community's flagship store for incense, handmade soaps, leather goods and crafts, a good spot to grab gifts you can't get anywhere else.
Ride back for sunset on Promenade Beach, then settle in at Bike & Barrel — a popular brewpub with house beers and a sociable crowd, the easy choice to round off the first night. With two days to play with, there's no rush; let the evening run long.
Day 2 — a backwater boat to a hidden beach
Day two switches gears and heads south for the backwaters. Grab a quick breakfast at Hot Breads — a reliable bakery chain for pastries and a fast coffee before the drive — then make for the Chunnambar Boat House, the jetty for the Chunnambar backwaters about 8 km south of town.
Have a proper sit-down lunch before you cross, at Jallikattu Restaurant, which sits right by the jetty — South Indian and seafood, and a smart move because food options are limited once you're across the water. Then take the boat ride over to Paradise Beach, the golden sandbar you reach by crossing the backwater. (Check the last return boat time when you buy tickets — boats stop running mid-afternoon, so don't dawdle.) The crossing itself is half the fun for a group.
From there you're close to Eden Beach, a Blue Flag-certified beach that's cleaner and quieter than the town beaches — a great place to stretch the afternoon out. On the way back, stop for a snack at the Daddy Amma Momo Shop, a cheap-and-cheerful momo joint that's exactly the kind of thing a hungry group falls on after a day in the sun.
Round off the trip with drinks at Cantos Social House, a lively bar-and-music spot built for groups — the right note to end a two-day weekend on.
Surf, beaches and the brewery scene: a group round-up
If you only remember three things about Pondicherry as a group, make it these: the surf, the beaches, and the breweries. Here's how they stack up.
The surf. The north coast around Serenity is the surf heart of the east coast of India. Kallialay Surf School runs lessons for all levels, and even a single beginner session is the highlight of most trips — it's social, it's a great photo, and it gives the day a real anchor. Morning sessions are best for cleaner conditions and a less brutal sun.
The beaches. Each one has its own character, and a good weekend touches several. Serenity Beach is the surfy, fishing-village stretch; Auroville Beach is the broad, busy one for swimming and lounging; Paradise Beach is the boat-access sandbar that feels like an outing; and Eden Beach is the clean, Blue Flag option for a quieter afternoon. Promenade Beach in town is rocky, not for swimming, but it's where everyone gathers at sunset.
The brewery scene. Pondicherry's union-territory status means the bar-and-brewery scene is livelier than much of Tamil Nadu next door, and it's a big part of why groups choose it. Catamaran Brewing Company brews its own craft beer, Bike & Barrel is a sociable brewpub, and Cantos Social House leans more bar-and-music. Keep it tasteful — these are good-time spots, not party-till-dawn clubs — and you'll have exactly the kind of evening this trip is built for.
Group tips for a Pondicherry weekend
- Rent scooters on arrival. A group of four needs two scooters, and they're the most flexible way to cover town, the surf beaches and Auroville. Carry your licence, wear the helmet, and split the group so nobody's left waiting. (If you're staying with us, ask — we can sort rentals.)
- Book the surf lesson ahead. Weekend slots at Kallialay fill up. A quick call the day before saves your group standing around on the sand.
- Do the active stuff early. Surf and beach in the cool morning; save shopping, cafés and the brewery for the heat of the afternoon and the cool of the evening.
- Eat before the boat. On the Paradise Beach day, have your real meal at Jallikattu by the jetty — food is scarce across the water, and you want to catch the boat back before service stops.
- Don't drink and ride. Once the breweries are on the agenda, leave the scooters parked and take an auto back. It's cheap and it's the only sensible call.
- Stay together, plan loosely. Use the live planner to agree a rough route in five minutes, then let the day breathe. The whole point of a trip with friends is not over-scheduling it.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best Pondicherry itinerary for a group of friends?
Start with a morning surf lesson at Kallialay Surf School on Serenity Beach while it's cool, beach-hop to Auroville Beach, shop in White Town, catch the sunset on Promenade Beach, and end at a craft brewery like Catamaran. Got two days? Add a backwater boat trip from Chunnambar to Paradise Beach. Both routes are in our free planner.
Can beginners take a surf lesson in Pondicherry?
Yes. Kallialay Surf School on Serenity Beach runs lessons for complete beginners — boards and rash vests are provided and the beach break is forgiving. Even if no one in your group has surfed before, a morning session is usually the highlight of the trip. Book a day ahead, especially on weekends.
Is there a good brewery or bar scene in Pondicherry?
Yes — as a union territory, Pondicherry has a livelier bar-and-brewery scene than much of Tamil Nadu nearby. Catamaran Brewing Company pours its own craft beer, Bike & Barrel is a sociable brewpub, and Cantos Social House leans more bar-and-music. They're good-time spots rather than late-night clubs, which suits a tasteful group weekend.
How do we get around Pondicherry as a group?
Rent scooters as soon as you arrive — a group of four needs two, and they're the most flexible way to reach the surf beaches and Auroville, which are 8–12 km north of town. White Town is compact and walkable, so park and explore on foot there. Once the breweries are on the agenda, leave the scooters and take an auto back.
Is one day enough, or should we stay two?
One day fits the surf-and-beach belt plus a brewery sunset comfortably. A second day is well worth it for the south backwaters — the Chunnambar boat to Paradise Beach and the quieter Eden Beach — so you're never repeating the same stretch of coast. Our planner has both the 1-day and 2-day routes ready to go.
Is the Pondicherry itinerary planner free?
Yes. Pick your stops, set a start time, and get a routed day plan with driving times and a live map — free, with no sign-up. Each curated plan, including these friends' routes, deep-links straight into it so you can adjust the order to your group's pace.
